The Baltimore Area Health Education Center (BAHEC) was established in 2003 to address the Baltimore urban community’s health issues and needs by linking together education, healthcare and accessibility for underserved individuals and families. BAHEC’s focus is to raise the health consciousness of the surrounding urban community by promoting good health and disease prevention and by helping make primary health care services more accessible for those in need.

The BAHEC seeks to improve upon the availability of health care to all residents by identifying the needs and concerns of the diverse population. In partnership with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the other UM health professions schools, the BAHEC works to enhance the health status of disadvantaged residents in and throughout Baltimore by assisting in the recruitment, training, and retention of health professions students.

The BAHEC’s areas of focus include:

  • Recruiting students from underserved communities into health professions.

  • Training and retaining health professions students in community-based sites throughout urban medically underserved areas.

  • Providing health promotion and disease prevention programs, including cultural competency education and training.

  • Providing assistance and support for physicians and health professionals in identifying the needs and issues affecting their ability to provide services in an urban environment.
